TRAINING TO ENHANCE EMOTIONAL SUPPORT AND MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING SKILLS FOR HIV SERVICE PROVIDERS IN QUANG NINH (AUGUST 22-24, 2024)
From August 22 to 24, 2024, a capacity-building training program for HIV service providers was held in Quang Ninh. Jointly organized by the EpiC Vietnam Project/FHI 360, Lighthouse Social Enterprise, and the Quang Ninh Center for Disease Control, the training attracted numerous representatives from northern community organizations. Beyond a mere skills workshop, this initiative aimed to equip participants with crucial knowledge to enhance mental healthcare services for target communities.
Mission and Objectives
The training was designed to provide participants with the necessary skills to offer emotional support and conduct motivational interviews. These competencies would enable healthcare providers to establish trusting relationships with clients and foster positive behavioral changes. Guided by Dr. Nguyen Thi Mai Huong, a renowned expert from Hanoi Medical University, the program offered comprehensive lectures and practical exercises to facilitate the application of learned knowledge.
Key Skills Acquired
Over the three-day training, participants honed their abilities in:
- Active listening: Participants learned to listen attentively and non-judgmentally, creating a space for clients to express their thoughts and feelings.
- Creating a safe environment: The training emphasized the importance of establishing a secure and supportive environment where clients feel valued and respected.
- Using affirmative statements: Participants were taught to employ affirming language to encourage and motivate clients, boosting their self-confidence.
- Developing behavior change plans: The training provided participants with the tools to create tailored behavior change plans to assist clients in achieving their goals.
Innovative Training Methods and a Supportive Learning Environment
A hallmark of this training was its innovative approach that combined theoretical knowledge with practical application. Through interactive discussions and realistic simulations, participants were able to grasp the concepts and apply them immediately. This hands-on experience bolstered their confidence in the workplace.
Moreover, the training fostered a supportive and inspiring learning environment. Participants not only learned from the trainer but also from their peers by sharing experiences and knowledge. This collaborative atmosphere created a strong learning community where everyone could grow and develop.
Community Impact
This training was more than just a knowledge-sharing event. It provided an opportunity for healthcare providers to connect and learn from each other. The skills and experiences gained from the training will empower participants to deliver more effective services to their clients, ultimately contributing to a healthier and happier community.
Conclusion
The training to enhance emotional support and motivational interviewing skills for HIV service providers in Quang Ninh concluded successfully, with participants expressing high levels of satisfaction. Equipped with valuable knowledge and skills, these healthcare providers are now better prepared to support their communities and improve the overall quality of life for those in need.
