Lighthouse contributes to the Global Reference on HIV Literacy
Lighthouse Social Enterprise is pleased to share the newly released “Global Reference on HIV Literacy: An Adaptive Resource for Communities, Programmes, and Policymakers”, developed by ITPC with support from UNAIDS.
This resource has been developed to support communities, HIV programmes, civil society organizations, service providers, and policymakers in strengthening HIV literacy in ways that are practical, accessible, rights-based, and adaptable to different contexts.
HIV literacy is not only about access to information. It is also about power, access, rights, protection, and the ability of communities to make informed decisions about their health and lives.
The resource brings together practical and adaptable knowledge to support community-led and people-centred HIV responses. It covers key areas across the HIV response, including HIV prevention, testing, treatment, mental health, stigma and discrimination, human rights, gender-related barriers, community-led monitoring, programme innovation, sustainability, and resilience.
Lighthouse is proud to have contributed to the development of this tool through our representative’s role on the Global Technical Advisory Board. This contribution brought community-based perspectives from Viet Nam and the region into the development process, helping ensure that the resource reflects the needs, voices, and lived realities of communities affected by HIV.

At Lighthouse, we believe that advancing HIV literacy is a critical foundation for health equity, community empowerment, and the right to health for people living with HIV, key populations, young people, and LGBTIQ+ communities.
When communities have access to accurate, understandable, and context-relevant information, they are better able to make informed decisions about HIV prevention, testing, treatment, mental health, their rights, and meaningful participation in decisions that affect their health and lives.
We hope this toolkit will be widely used by communities, advocates, service providers, programme implementers, and policymakers to strengthen HIV responses that are more inclusive, informed, accountable, and grounded in the real needs of communities.
